Volunteering: Overview

Hospice volunteers really make a difference! They provide important support and contact for our patients and their families. Our volunteers can shape their assignments to best fit their time and interests. It is a meaningful way to use your time. Whether in a patient's home, on our in-patient unit, as bereavement support or in an administrative capacity, your volunteer role will make you part of a team of caring professionals. You must be 18 years or older to be a hospice volunteer.

Each hospice volunteer is required to attend mandatory training, which is provided by Community Hospices' staff. The training is a minimum of 16 hours; the training requirement varies according to jurisdiction and may be longer in duration. Volunteer training provides you with a comprehensive overview of hospice philosophy, focusing on our program in particular. Training is a good chance for us to get to know more about you and for you to explore hospice volunteering. Once you decide to become a volunteer, you will be asked to commit to three hours a week for at least one year. Exceptions to the training requirement includes work that is strictly administrative or driving staff during weather emergencies.
